Q: Engine Coolant Thermometer...?
The Check Engine light went on for my 2001 Volvo S40 1.8T and I took it to Advanced Auto Parts for diagnostics. The diagnostics said that there was a failure in the engine coolant thermometer. They said they sell this part. Does anyone know if this would be a replacement that I could do on my own or if I should just bring it for service?

A: It's not a straight shot at the sensor and just pulling it out. You have to remove some coolant from the radiator, remove the reservoir cover, the splash guard under the engine (to get to the radiator drain), remove the thermostat housing, fuel rail cover, upper camshaft cover, remove a fuel injector connector to swing the therm cover out of the way and then remove the ECT connector and part. Plan on about 2 hours+ taking your time, not breaking any covers and putting everything back the way it was originally. I hope this helps.

Q: Know a good website?
Im looking to purchase a side bars(also called nerf bars, side steps) FOR MY vOLVO XC90 2005. Do you know a good auto car parts and accessories website where i could buy some from. Better if I could compare aftermarket and OEM prices and looks. thanks

Q: Can auto insurance companies affect your driving record?
I had a minor accident 11/28/08, turning left into a 2 lane T-street. My (2007 Scion tc) front Passenger-side bumper had touched her (198X Volvo) rear driver-side bumper, and dislocated it out about 3 inches. The biggest problem was that the car wasn't mine, I had borrowed my roommate's car, and had no insurance. We decided to take care of it on the side, traded info, no cops or agents came. She would fix it and let me know the cost. Honestly didn't look too bad~ No one was hurt, we parted in a friendly tone. A week later, she called and told me the repair estimate was $3500 and had reported to her insurance company. My roommate's car insurance was the same company as hers, Farmer's Insurance. Farmers later called me and recorded a statement from me with all my info, informing me she had also claimed physical injuries. It's still being processed, I haven't paid anything yet. Now I've just bought a car, and am shopping for insurance. Could her insurance company affect my driving record? Oh, I meant that I wasn't insured on my roomate's policy, he has Farmers liability insurance.

A: You were driving your friends car with his permission. His insurance covers you. Don't pay it yourself. It won't harm your driving record with the motor vehicle laws. It will probably affect your insurance rate if and when you apply for it. But the purpose of insurance is to provide financial reimbursement for losses you cannot pay out of your pocket. It is not a bad/good thing. Don't hesitate to tell the claims person you think the other driver is making a fraudulent claim. They know how to prove that very well and will appreciate your info on it. Car repairs are very expensive. Do you think she was injured? Was she taken to ER to be checked? She sounds like she's thinking law suit to greatly benefit from this. It is the right thing to do it this way. You have a legal responsibility to co-operate to the max with the insurance claims person. Don't be afraid but don't pay for it yourself or let your friend pay for it. No deductible will apply as it is covered under Bodily Injury/Physical Damage (to other drivers)

Q: Which cars on the market, if purchased, would contribute most to the USA GDP?
It's no simple answer... A lot of Lincoln's are made in Mexico. Some Chevy's are made in China. Lot's of Toyota's and Honda's are made in America. So which manufacture actually contributes the most to our GDP? Is it a Honda Accord which is 70% American parts and assembled in Ohio but owned by Japan? Or is it something like the Lincoln MKZ which is 50% American parts but it's made in Mexico. And what about Jags? They are owned by Ford but made in the U.K... Same with Volvo's, Land Rovers, and Mazda's... All owned by Ford. But would buying one actually contribute to our GDP? And let's say for some reason I decided on a Chevy Malibu, that is 86% American parts and made in KS... But how much of that really goes to the GDP? Here is where I found my stats: http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2007-03-21-car-content-chart_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip . Thanks.

A: I'm gonna go with the Ford F-Series Truck Not only does it have the most North American content, it is also the number 1 selling vehicle in the US & has held that title for over a decade. It has been the #1 selling truck for 31 consecutive years. So the vehicle that contributes most to the GDP is not a car at all but a truck. I have saved the link that you got your data from & will use it in the future. I did find an error or 2 in it but they are not important to this particular question. I also would like to share a related article with you. It is taken from "AutoNews" last year as well, and is very pertanant to your question...which you are right...it is NOT an easy question! http://www.thecarconnection.com/pf/Auto_News/Commentary/At_Witz_End_Whats_an_American_Car.S192.A11981.html NOTE: If you were specificly looking for a "car" rather that a 'vehicle'...i'll go with the Ford/Mercury Taurus/TaurusX/Sable/SableX...which are all built in my hometown of Chicago... ;-)

Q: How much should this Repair to my Volvo Wagon Cost? Volvo 740 Wagon?
I just had a full 120,000 mile tuneup and timing belt replaced about 10 days ago. Two days later I noticed the smell of gas and a day after that I noticed my car was leaking about a half quart of oil per day. I took my car to the nearest Volvo mechanic, which is not the same dealership I did the service at (Bill Kidd's Volvo in Timonium, MD). The new Volvo mechanic (Scandinavian Auto in Rockville, MD) is claiming I need a new fuel pump and will not be able to see why my oil is leaking until they do this service for safety reasons. When I had the tuneup done at Bill Kidd's, they had torn the fuel line (I believe) and replaced it. Now I am stuck here as to what I should do. Can someone please help me out? Of course, I believe that Bill Kidd's must be responsible for the improper installation of some parts for all of this to happen within two days of my getting the car back! I have invested over $2,000 in repairs, so I just need to figure out what is reasonable for this work.

A: In 1995, I had the fuel pump replaced in my 1977 Volvo and it cost approximately $450. I would get the opinion of the new repair shop (regarding any possible negligence by the previous repair shop), have the repairs done (by the new shop) and speak to an attorney about legal options for reimbursement by the first shop if this is indeed their fault. You could also try confronting the first shop regarding the repairs that are needed, but they will most likely tell you that they didn't do anything and then jack up the price to re-fix everything. Good luck!
